Advice from Boagworld.com on corporate blogging

13 March 10 , ,

My favorite web design podcast, Boagworld, recently did a short feature on why blogs fail. The host Paul Boag talks about company/corporate blogs, but much of what he describes applies to personal blogs as well. The gist of it is:

  1. Blogs fail because bloggers stop blogging
  2. Bloggers stop blogging because blogging is hard

Blogging is hard

I can attest to this. The list of things that make blogging hard is long.

  • Sometimes it’s hard to think of what to write
  • Sometimes there seems to be too much to write about
  • It’s easy to let perfect be the enemy of good enough
  • The lack of response or feedback can be discouraging—is anyone listening?

Solutions

In the piece, Paul makes a couple of helpful suggestions. The best one is just to keep a list of possible blog posts on hand, for when you find yourself drawing a blank. He provides a list of several types of blog posts you can turn to to help generate ideas, including:

  • Interviews
  • News from your field
  • Reviews
  • Hints and tips

Listen to the feature (you can also read the transcript).
