Introduction to Google Webmaster Tools

24 June 09 , ,

In addition to its extremely complete Analytics web statistics package, Google also provides a set of tools for webmasters to track broken links, keep track of sitemaps, and more.

Accessing Google Webmaster Tools

  1. Go to google.com/webmasters/tools and login with your Google ID
  2. Click Add a Site, and enter the URL of your website
  3. You will be shown a page that displays “Not Verified” and a short snippet of code
  4. Copy that bit of code and email it to me, and click “Verify Later”
  5. After I have added the snippet to your site, you can log back in and click “Verify”

The Dashboard

On the Webmaster Tools Dashboard, you will see summaries of a few features of Tools: Top Search Queries, Crawl Errors, Links to Your Site, and Sitemaps, each with a link for more detailed information. In my next post, I’ll take a closer look at Top Search Queries and other aspects of Your Site on the Web that Tools provides.
