Submit your blog to directories
Once you’ve got your blog (and I use the term blog broadly — any website with regularly published content) up and running, you’ll want to let the world know about it. One way to do this is by submitting it to various blog directories. There several general directories, and there may be one specific to your topic as well.
General directories
Most general directories allow you to pick one or two categories and provide a short description for your blog. Here is a list of some top directories:
- Technorati First create an account, then visit your profile page. At the very bottom you can enter a url to begin the process of claiming your blog.
- Twingly Just enter your url
- BlogCatalog First create an account, then add your blog. You can provide categories, tags, and a description for your blog. You will be given several options for verifying your ownership of the blog. The easiest is to copy and paste the “meta tag” into an email and send it off to me.
- Blogged Similar to other directories, submit your url, pick some categories and tags, and add a description.
- Open Directory Project This one isn’t just for blog. First navigate to the most specific category your blog/site falls into. Then in the upper right select “Suggest a URL” and fill in the required information.
- Yahoo Directory Similar to the Open Directory, this is for any type of site, and the process is much the same, except that it costs $299!!
Topical directories
To discover directories that may cater to your particular topic, do a little Google research. For example, I might search on “web designer directory” or “web portfolio directory”, etc. Chances are if you have popular topic, someone has started a directory of sites and blogs related to it.
