What is a web browser?

21 February 2008

Well now this one is really basic, but I feel compelled to write it, because sometimes I hear puzzlement in my clients’ voices when I ask something like “So, what browser are you using?”.

A browser is a software program, such as Firefox, Safari, Opera, (all highly recommended) or Internet Explorer (please at least upgrade to version 7), that allows you to “browse” web pages. You can enter a web address, or url, directly into the browser’s address bar, and that website will display in the browser window, for you to view and interact with.

The upper left corner of a Firefox browser window.

The back, forward, refresh, cancel, and home buttons in the Firefox browser, followed by the address bar, where you can type in any url.

Google, by contrast is a search engine , which is most useful when you don’t know which website you want to view, or perhaps you just don’t know the site’s url.
