What is an AdWords campaign?

23 September 09 , , ,

Both AdWords and AdSense are Google products:

AdWords

is Google's pay-per-click advertising program in which site owners can pay to have advertisements show up with Google search results as "Sponsored Links", OR on websites participating in the AdSense program.

Advertisers pick keywords for which they want their ads shown, and set the cost-per-click that they are willing to pay, as well as a monthly maximum.

AdSense

conversely, is Google's ad serving program, in which site owners allow Google to place ads on their site (or even in their RSS feed), in return for a share in the profits. AdSense ads may pay on a per-click or per-impression basis.

AdWords Campaigns

An AdWords Campaign, then, is just like any marketing campaign: a targeted push to promote a certain product or service to a specific group of people. In AdWords, you set up Campaigns which can each have several different ads associated with it. You can then track the performance of each ad and each campaign.

You’ll have different keywords and maybe different landing pages on your website for different campaigns. For example, on a site selling candy, you may have certain ads that are associated with “fruity candy” and related keywords, and those ads link to a page on your site dedicated to fruity candy. A separate campaign might target people searching for “licorice candy” and lead them to a page just about licorice, and so on.

Companies pay a lot of money to SEO, marketing, and AdWords specialists to develop campaigns, but in future posts I will look at some basic guidelines and techniques.
