What the font?

8 November 2008

I’ve just re-discovered a brilliant tool to help you identify a font. If you see a font you really like in a magazine, on a website, or in a logo, you can use Myfonts.com’s What The Font? tool to identify it.

You need a clean image of the font in GIF, JPEG, TIFF, or BMP format (try grabbing a screenshot, or scanning from a hardcopy). The higher the contrast, the better, and the letters should be unobstructed and not touching. There are other helpful tips towards the bottom of the What The Font? page.

If the What The Font service fails you, you can try out Identifont, which takes you through a series of questions about the font sample to narrow down the possibilities. A bit time consuming, but it’s sort of a fun process.
